CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Terra Branford
Canon: Final Fantasy VI
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: After the Floating Continent falls apart, at the end of the World of Balance, before waking up in the World of Ruin.
Number: 003
Setting: Final Fantasy VI overview, in-depth view of Terra.
History: Long, long ago, the Warring Triad ruled the land as the gods of magic. They feared each others' power, and enslaved humans and Espers alike to fight for them. Eventually, though, the Triad realized the destruction they were causing by their fighting, so they froze themselves in stone, asking the Espers to keep them safe and to let them never awaken. They aligned themselves in a triangle, neutralizing one another's powers. As long as the Triad existed, though, magic would exist.
Humans and Espers lived in peace for a long time, until 1000 years before Terra's birth, when the War of the Magi broke out. Humans sought the power of Espers, as they were magic users, and many humans imbued themselves with their power, birthing a new race: Magi. The war was quite devastating, and the Espers that weren't killed fled to their own land and sealed it off, taking with them the Warring Triad. Humans then turned their destruction onto the Magi, believing them to be the cause of the war. The last remaining ones fled to Thamasa, keeping their magic mostly a secret.
The war was so devastating that it took almost another thousand years just for humans to rediscover the power of steam. The power of magic, then, was basically lost to legends and folk tales, and humans lived in relative peace from then on, until we come to the present day, where the Gestahlian Empire plans to find Espers and harvest their powers. They began using experimental procedures to infuse their soldiers with magic. The very first experimental soldier was one known as Kefka Palazzo.
It was around this time that Terra was born. Her birth was one of the most significant, being the first known human/Esper hybrid. A woman named Madeline had stumbled into the land of the Espers, tired of the human world, and fell in love with an Esper named Maudin. Of their union came Terra, but the other Espers were wary of her and Madeline. Unfortunately, Emperor Gestahl and his troops invaded the land, attacking many to use for their experiments.
As a result, the Espers drove Madeline and Terra out, blaming them for leading Gestahl there. An Esper cast a spell that drove out the troops and sealed the land, blocking Madeline, Maudin, and Terra from returning. Unfortunately, Gestahl discovered them and killed Madeline, capturing Maudin and Terra for his own use.
Terra was raised by the Empire, being brought up as a soldier with the innate gift of magic. Her childhood is relatively unknown, but she was likely isolated from the world, never interacting with anyone but other soldiers such as Celes Chere, a general who was infused with magicite as a baby.
As mentioned before, Kefka was the first soldier infused with magicite. Unfortunately, the experiment on him caused him to go insane, holding terrible power and no regard for other life. Shortly before the game's beginning, when Terra was in her late teens, Kefka put a Slave Crown on her head, thus being able to control her and her awesome powers. Her first task was to cast a fire spell and annihilate fifty Empire soldiers, and she did so without flinching. So, she became known as the "witch."
At the time of the game's start, Terra is eighteen and under the control of the Slave Crown. She is sent to the city of Narshe with two other soldiers to investigate the frozen Esper in the ice from the ancient days of the War of the Magi: Valigarmanda. When she approaches it, the power of the Esper knocks Terra and the two soldiers unconscious, and she is rescued by the local resident Arvis.
Arvis removes her slave crown, and Terra wakes up disoriented and with retrograde amnesia, only recalling her name and brief glimpses of the Gestahlian Empire. However, Terra is a valued asset of the Empire, so it's not long before soldiers storm Narshe looking for her. Arvis summons Locke Cole, a treasure hunter and member of the resistance group the Returners, to help Terra to safety, and he escapes with her to Figaro.
King Edgar Roni Figaro, while maintaining an alliance with the Empire, is secretly part of the resistance as well, hiding Terra when the soldiers and Kefka come looking for her again. Of course, the alliance is immediately broken as Kefka tries to set fire to the castle.
Edgar, Locke, and Terra escape to the mountains, meeting up with Edgar's twin brother Sabin Rene Figaro, who had left the kingdom ten years prior to study martial arts. Eventually, they go to the Returners' Hideout, meeting with the resistance leader Banon. Banon explains that he needs Terra's powers to fight the Empire, but cannot force her to do so, as that would make them no different from the Empire.
After thinking about it, Terra finally agrees to help, using her heritage as a human/Esper hybrid, creating a link between the two worlds. The five of them then plan to travel back to Narshe on the Lethe River, but they are knocked into the water and separated by the octopus Ultros. After playing out three different scenarios (Locke alone recruits Celes in South Figaro, rescuing her from being tortured by the Empire for betrayal; Sabin travels through the Mystic Forest with the assassin Shadow, recruiting the knight Cyan Garamonde from the kingdom of Doma, which had been slaughtered by Kefka, and recruiting the feral child Gau; and Terra, Edgar, and Banon travel back to Narshe), the group reunites in Narshe with Arvis.
Kefka and the Imperial soldiers storm Narshe soon thereafter, planning to capture the frozen Esper Valigarmanda, but the Returners stage a defense, forcing Kefka and his troops to retreat. Finally, Terra approaches the Esper once more, causing a brand new reaction in her. The rest of the Returners watch in horror as she transforms into a white/pink Esper and flies off into the distance.
The party finally ventures to the corrupt city of Zozo, where she is resting in the top floor of a tower, being cared for by another Esper, Ramuh. He tells them that Terra must be reunited with her father in order to recover, so the group infiltrates the Magitek Research Facility, discovering several beaten Espers. As they die, they turn themselves into magicite and grant their powers to the party, enabling them to equip the magicite and use magic themselves.
Maudin's magicite is one that is recovered, and when brought back to Terra, she finally awakens, reverting to her human state. She finally regains her memories and the ability to control her Esper form. This becomes a huge asset in battle, where she can transform for short periods of time and greatly enhance her power.
The Returners then decide to use Terra to enlist the help of the Espers to attack the Empire from the East. Being of Esper heritage, Terra thinks she may be able to contact the Espers and have them unseal the gate. Of course, Kefka and his troops follow them to the Sealed Gate, but as soon as the gate opens, hordes of Espers flood out and attack Kefka. While the party is able to escape to their airship, the Blackjack (owned by another new recruit, Setzer Gabbianni), the Espers still attack them and they make an emergency landing near Vector, the heart of the Empire.
As they enter the city, though, it is up in flames, and Emperor Gestahl approaches the Returners to announce his surrender. Gestahl asks Terra to relay this message to the Espers who are hiding out on Crescent Island, and sends General Leo Christophe, Celes, and Shadow (whom he hired) to accompany her and Locke. They stop at the village of Thamasa to inquire about Espers, but everyone is hostile toward them.
Strago Magus, an elderly man, befriends the party, and as they stay the night, his granddaughter Relm is caught in a burning house. The party rescues her (saved at the last minute by Shadow, who, in a twist of events, turns out to be Relm's father), and Strago reveals his magical powers to put out the fire. The village of Thamasa consists of the Magi, the magic-using humans from the War. Strago and Relm join the party, and they travel to the gathering place of the Espers.
Terra convinces the Espers to hold conference with Emperor Gestahl and negotiate peace, but unfortunately, the peace meeting was a ruse for the Empire to gain more Espers to enslave. Kefka kills most of the Espers and General Leo as well, and leaves toward the Sealed Gate to collect more magicite. Their actions revive the Warring Triad, sending the Esper land up into the air, becoming the Floating Continent.
If the Warring Triad's formation is disturbed, drastic destruction could occur, so the Returners rush to the continent to confront Kefka and Gestahl. Unfortunately, they fail to stop them in time. Kefka murders Gestahl in a gleeful rage, and arranges the Triad, causing the continent to crumble. The party escapes to the airship, but the destruction is so great and the party is separated as they fall from it.
When Terra awakens, though, she finds herself in a brand new world: the Tranquility.
Personality: In brief, Terra is a kind person with a good heart, trying to find her place in the world. When she's first introduced, she is disoriented, but she knows that she's not a bad person. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, and when she is reminded of how she was a "witch" or how she isn't "human" or "normal," it upsets her. She just wants to be normal, to find her niche.
Terra is also afraid of feeling helpless as she often feels at parts in the beginning of the game. While she does carry immense magic power with the ability to kill, there are so many people fighting over her power that she feels used and powerless. She does not want to hurt others unless it's necessary.
Even after she regains her memories of her time in the Empire, her desire to be "human" increases. A recurring theme throughout the game is that of love, and Terra often worries that a hybrid like her will never come to experience that emotion. When General Leo accompanies her to Thamasa, she confides in him, telling him her worry about love. He assures her that she is young and will be able to love one day, and they develop a short friendship as a result. Unfortunately, when Leo dies, Terra is devastated, and even holds a makeshift funeral for him, saying "You taught me so much..."
Even though Terra worries about not being able to love, it's very clear that she cares about others. Her grief at Leo's death is a great indicator of such, and her horror at having killed fifty Imperial soldiers while being controlled is another. Though, the latter is likely her horror at being controlled, and that is her greatest fear: to be controlled again.
Terra does, of course, gain the ability to love, coming to care for the children of Mobliz like a mother later in the game (after her canon point). It's very possible for Terra to come to love people on the Tranquility either in platonic or romantic terms.
In terms of romance, Terra is relatively clueless. Having been raised in such an isolated environment, she likely did not learn much about romance save for maybe some fables or fairy tales, or the occasional romance novel. Even so, when Edgar flirts with her, she feels nothing, only being slightly confused. She can sense his intent, but the fact that she feels nothing makes her worry about her ability to feel love. On the other hand, she just doesn't realize that not everyone has to react positively to flirting.
It's clear she cares about the Returners, or at least the ones she knows well, such as Edgar, Celes, Locke, Setzer, and Sabin. She views them as friends and comrades at arms, and they care about her too, going to great lengths to ensure her safety and well-being. Terra cares about them and the world enough to put her own safety aside, though, and fight for what is right. When she comes to love the children of Mobliz, that is when she gains the resolve to fight. She is able to face the possibility of dying as a result of magic being eliminated from the world just so that the world can be a better place for those she loves.
Basically, Terra is a selfless being, only being more "selfish" when she feels she is being controlled. Had the Returners forced her to join them, she likely would not have complied. Because the choice was hers, she joined them, and was motivated to fight for the good of the world. She becomes determined and passionate, but still fears the Empire and Kefka.
Socialization can be difficult for Terra, given her isolated upbringing. She shows little reaction to flirting, and can appear dispassionate and cold at times due to not knowing what to say or how to react. While her socialization improves throughout the game, she may still have periods where she can appear aloof or awkward.
As the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VI, Terra is overall a good person, holding a beautiful heart with passion and determination. While she cares and worries for herself, she has sympathy for others. As for other random tidbits: Terra loves animals. While this is not touched upon much in the game, it is mentioned in the official guidebook. It's likely she feels more of an identification with them, due to her not being quite human. She also hates crowded places, which likely coincides with her fear of the Empire and of being controlled. Her favorite hobby is fluffing moogles, as she likely gets a tactile stimulation and comfort from such.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Terra is actually quite a powerful being. She is a rare person with innate magic powers. Even though the rest of the Returners can learn magic through magicite, Terra's magic is still more powerful, due to her being half-Esper. She also learns other magic with magicite, developing a large repertoire of spells. At this point in the game, she likely has most or all of the high-level elemental spells (Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Curaga, etc.) and perhaps one or two higher-level spells (like Flare). She's also very adept with a sword, though not as skilled as others in the party like Edgar or Cyan. She can also transform into her Esper form, which enhances her magic power greatly. That form only lasts for a limited time, though, and can only be used once a day. (It's unlikely she'll use it often, though.)
However, Terra is not going to attack or fight without just cause. She's not going to randomly unleash Hell upon the Tranquility, and will probably only very rarely use her magic.
Because Terra is a fairly powerful being, though, I'll nerf her magic to around 50-60% power.
Terra is largely unfamiliar with any technology beyond that of steam power, and even then is not a technological person. That strength goes to Edgar instead. It's likely she'll find community with the non-human entities on the shipgod help her if she meets the evil AIs though, but will overall be friendly to those she can. She can be quiet, though, and hard to approach at times, and her fear of being controlled can hinder her determination.
Inventory: Terra will have some of her beautiful hair ties to keep her signature ponytail. She'll also have a sword.
Appearance: Terra is a beautiful young woman who stands at about 5'3". She has long, curly light green hair that she keeps tied back in a ponytail most of the time. She generally wears a red dress with a cape and armor, though right now in the Tranquility she'll mainly have the crew uniform. Image of Terra.
Her Esper form is a light-pink/purple color, and she stands naked (though it's okay because she doesn't need to be censored?). She has a more bestial face and her long hair becomes almost like a flame, trailing wildly behind her. Esper Form Image.
Age: Eighteen.
AU Clarification: N/A
SAMPLES
Log Sample: As the fluid drained from the chamber, Terra opened her eyes, unsure of where she was. Once her level of alertness came to in a few short moments, she was met with a sense of alarm. She was suspended in a tube, it seemed, and as she peered out of the opening, it seemed she wasn't the only one.
Kefka. Kefka had captured her. And everyone else. Hurriedly, she rushed out of the stasis chamber, finding others doing the same. She quickly looked among the others, trying to find someone she knew, but there was no one. So many unfamiliar faces, all victims of... something. No, this wasn't Kefka's doing. Why would he capture a bunch of humans? He would kill them first, just like he killed Leo and Gestahl in cold blood. Besides, if everyone could willingly enter and exit these chambers, then this wasn't what she thought it was.
But even so, where was she? Where were the rest of the Returners? In addition, where were her clothes? Terra looked down to find she was stark naked, embarrassing for her as a human, though she was coated in a fine layer of a mucous-like substance. But behind that grime, she noticed something on her arm. A number. Her eyes grew wide as she examined it,
How had this happened? Was this a dream? Cautiously, Terra followed the masses of people toward wherever they were going. Showers. That was a good idea.
As she became more alert, though, Terra remembered what happened before. The airship. The Floating Continent. She had been thrown off the Blackjack, Setzer clutching her hand, and... then she woke up here. This was nothing like she knew. The stasis chambers looked similar to the machines the Empire used to drain Espers, but... it wasn't the same.
As she followed to the showers, her eyes still darted back and forth, looking for some sort of clue as to what was going on, where she was, what had happened.
Comms Sample:
[The video feed turns on to reveal a young woman with long, green curly hair, looking quizzically forward.]
What... What is this?
[Slowly, a fingernail moved forward to tap the screen, and Terra's eyes widened as she realized the device was indeed recording her... somehow.]
I... I don't know where I am. I don't know what happened.
[She's hesitant to ask for the names of her friends, in case something had happened, in case they were being hunted down. But even so...]
I heard we're in outer Space. But... I don't know how that's possible. What happened to the Earth? Is it...
[She swallows, thinking about it. The Earth. It had been destroyed, hadn't it? She attempts to shut off the device quickly, contemplating what this meant. Her friends, everyone she knew: gone. The entire world, both races she belonged to: extinct. Unfortunately, she couldn't figure out how to turn the device off. The video shows her face growing blank as she withdraws into herself, unknowing of how to cope with this.
Death. That was all she ever knew.]

Her Esper form is a light-pink/purple color, and she stands naked (though it's okay because she doesn't need to be censored?). She has a more bestial face and her long hair becomes almost like a flame, trailing wildly behind her. Esper Form Image.
